The first thing to strike you about Pieve del Borgo must be its old history, noticeable right from the large external gate. A Byzantine fortress in the IV century AD, it was a castle belonging to the Abbey of Sant'Ellero during the papacy of Innocent III. Set among the wooded Romagna hills, where the only noise is that of the wind and the flowing river, Pieve del Borgo is today unique in its kind, having passed, from 1400 onwards, under various dominions, such as the Florentine Republic, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (until 1859) and the Province of Florence up until 1923. Strolling among the gardens that were once a meeting point of culture and tradition, gazing out over the valley, sleeping in the renovated sacristy, being enthralled by the deconsecrated church: all this is Pieve del Borgo and is possible thanks to more than 25 years of intense work, of thousands of stones laid with sweat and toil, of tons of dug-up earth, of materials chosen to guarantee a non-invasive restoration and to an enormous passion and respect for its history, noticeable in every corner of this incredible place.
